Born on March 14, 1959, in Hollywood, Florida, to J. Edward Houston and June Houston, Bart Houston was groomed from an early age to understand the power of the law and the importance of legal rights.

His father and mentor, J. Edward Houston—an attorney who attended Stetson Law School—became the youngest bankruptcy judge on the bench and later the president of Barnett Bank. A civic leader, J. Edward played a pivotal role in modernizing Broward County during the 1970s and 1980s.

His efforts to establish the "bed tax" on visitors—which still funds Broward's tourism marketing today—earned him the Fort Lauderdale News and Sentinel's (now the Sun Sentinel) "Broward Business Leader of the Year" award in 1982, honoring his work at Barnett Bank and downtown development. A tireless worker, he was an early member of the Downtown Development Authority, advocating for cultural landmarks like the library, museum, and performing arts center.

J. Edward's own legacy began as the son of Robert E. Houston, who served as mayor of Dania Beach for almost 20 years. From childhood, J. Edward recognized the law's influence and the value of rights.

Bart absorbed his father's sharp intellect and intensity. When J. Edward once expressed regret over never practicing law alongside his son, Bart immediately resigned from a national firm and founded The Houston Law Firm, where the two worked together until J. Edward's passing in 2014.
